About
In the moonlight, a tiny egg lay on the leaf.
On Sunday morning, the sun came up and "bang!" a tiny, hungry caterpillar crawled out of the egg.
He started looking for food. On Monday he ate an apple, but he was still hungry. On Tuesday he ate two pears, but he was still hungry. On Wednesday he ate three plums, but he was still hungry. On Thursday he ate four strawberries, but he was still hungry. On Friday he ate five oranges, but he was still hungry. On Saturday he ate a piece of chocolate cake, an ice cream, a cucumber, a piece of cheese, a ham, a lollipop, a cherry pie, a sausage, a cupcake, and a slice of watermelon. That night the caterpillar had a stomachache.
The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate the green leaves and felt much better.
Now, he was no longer hungry, and he was no longer a small caterpillar, but a big, fat caterpillar. He built a small house, called a cocoon, and wrapped himself in it. He stayed in it for more than two weeks, and then he bit a small hole and squeezed out.
The caterpillar turned into a beautiful butterfly.

About the Author
Born on June 25, 1929 in Syracuse, New York, USA. Both of his parents were German, and when he was 6 years old, he moved back to Germany with his parents. Eric Carle hated German-style education, and dropped out of high school at the age of 16. Under the persuasion of his teacher, he studied visual arts for four years at a prestigious art school in Stuttgart. While still in school, he drew a series of posters for the American Intelligence Center. After graduation, he worked as an art director for a fashion magazine, but he missed the sunny classroom in the United States where he could paint freely when he was a child, and wanted to return to the United States. Finally, in 1952, when he was 23 years old, he returned to New York alone with 40 dollars in his pocket after 17 years. He called Leo Lionni, who was the art director of Fortune magazine at the time and later became famous for his works such as "Little Blue and Little Yellow" and "Little Black Fish". Leo Lionni not only invited him to lunch, but also introduced him to a job.
He started writing picture books when he was nearly 40 years old. So far, he has created more than 70 colorful collage-style picture books, including Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (1967), 1,2,3 To The Zoo (1968), The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Busy Spider (1985), and Papa, Please Get The Moon For Me (1986). These books have been translated into more than 30 languages and have young readers all over the world. In December 2002, his personal art gallery, the Eric Carle Picture Book Gallery, opened in Massachusetts, which is also the first picture book gallery in the United States.
However, for a long time, his picture books did not receive the proper recognition, and he did not even receive the Caldecott Medal, because critics did not like to reduce books to the level of toys. In 2003, in order to make up for this shortcoming, the American Library Association awarded him the Laura Inger Holt Award, which can be regarded as a belated recognition of the artistry of his works.
